LOS ANGELES – October 10, 2023 – SoCalGas announced today that 13 organizations, including the Wyland Foundation, have been awarded project grants of up to $40,000 each through the SoCal Climate Champions Grant. This grant supports projects that focus on resilient energy, clean air, and organic waste to reduce, mitigate, or sequester greenhouse gas emissions.

The Wyland foundation has been working  to increase understanding of the many forces that affect the future of our water supply and marine habitat, particularly targeting students in traditional and underserved areas. Steve Creech, Wyland Foundation President, said, “With this grant from SoCalGas, the Wyland Foundation can expand our Clean Water Mobile Learning Experience to help students understand the impacts of climate change on our water systems.”

The SoCal Climate Champions Grant, initiated in 2021, has distributed $1 million in grants to nonprofits focusing on a more sustainable future. It is part of SoCalGas’ Environmental Champions Initiative, which began in 2015. Since its inception, the initiative has awarded more than 200 grants, totaling over $3.8 million, to support environmental projects.

Jawaad Malik, Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer at SoCalGas, said, “Our recipients are implementing climate solutions that align with SoCalGas’ ASPIRE 2045 Sustainability strategy. We’re proud to support projects that move our communities towards California’s net-zero emissions goals.”

In addition to the Wyland Foundation, the 2023 awardees are the North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council, Santa Monica Mountains Fund, The Ecology Center, Akoma Unity Center, San Bernardino Valley College, Trust for Public Land, AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, Go Green Initiative, Friends of Ballona Wetlands, GrowingGreat, and Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.
