Wyland made his second trip to Japan when he was asked to paint a mural at Shinjuku Station for “24-Hour Television.” Essentially, it was a day-long telethon to raise money to help the planet, and Wyland was to complete one of his Whaling Walls within the 24-hour marathon.

“I painted this mural outside, in front of thousands of Japanese citizens,” Wyland recalls. “It was broadcast live over national television, and our message about the role of conservation and the need to protect marine life was carried throughout Japan.

“The painting depicts two bottlenose dolphins frolicking through the Pacific. Millions of dollars were raised during the telethon to fund conservation efforts throughout Japan. Only today have the Japanese realized the impact of overfishing and misuse of our natural resources. As a result, environmental groups are starting to emerge within Japan.

• In 1989, during an urbanization boom, pollution and overfishing were increasingly threatening Japan’s coastal waters. This rapid growth threatened vast ecosystems, pressing the need for drastic changes in Japan to stabilize the health of its marine resources before conditions worsened.
• The mural project for Shinjuku Station contributed to the growing conversation about Japan’s role in marine conservation.
