-Right Whales off the South Carolina Coast

This mural in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was Team Wyland’s 14th mural in 14 weeks, and the artist and his crew had the tour’s routine down to where everything went like clockwork.

“This mural almost painted itself,” Wyland says. “What was nice about the work going so smoothly was that I had a chance to talk to thousands of children. At one point, I think 600 kids came to watch me paint. School had just started, and they were busing children in from everywhere” One seventh-grade
schoolteacher brought her class to the wall to discuss whales with Wyland. “They beat me to the punch,” he laughed.”They knew a lot more about marine life than I ever did at their age, and that reinforces my belief that we still have a chance to save the whales and our oceans.”

Wyland painted right whales on the mural because, even though they’re the most endangered of the whale species, they can occasionally be seen off the South Carolina coast. Three right whales—a mother, her calf, and another adult—now swim across the 250-foot-long wall along with four bottlenose dolphins.
