“Orcas off the San Juan Islands” showcased the sight of a pod of orcas at home in the cold,nutrient-rich waters of Puget Sound. The mural was dedicated by Mayor Norm Rice, who helped Wyland in his efforts to draw attention to the importance of the San Juan Islands and their habitat for the endangered Southern Resident orca population. At the time the mural was painted, marine ecosystems in the region were in a fragile state. Fish stocks that the orcas relied upon had decreased and increasing boat traffic raised the potential for harmful contact between boaters and the orcas.

Inherent in the message of the mural was the beauty of these majestic creatures that could eventually be lost. Seattle’s rapid expansion at the time brought an ever-growing amount of urban runoff and introduced oil, fertilizer, and heavy metals into regional waterways. It was these conditions that precipitated the Wyland Foundation’s broader efforts to bring attention towards upstream human activities and their effects on marine habitats downstream. “Orcas off
the San Juan Islands” put special focus on especially pristine and productive ecosystems in the areas surrounding the San Juan Islands.

The Puget Sound regularly experiences significant urban runoff, one of the largest sources of pollution in the area. When rainwater passes through city streets and industrial sites, it gathers harmful chemicals and carries them into freshwater and marine ecosystems. Chinook salmon, the primary food source for orcas, are popular enough that overfishing has become a growing concern. This will further threaten endangered orcas as their availability declines as a result.

Urban areas, like Seattle in particular, can experience a significant decline in the health of their marine environments. Thanks to Wyland’s mural and the efforts of organizations like the Wyland Foundation, people may begin to understand that their daily activities can directly affect downstream marine life. Critical habitats like the San Juan Islands can be protected, along with the most vulnerable species, through careful consideration.
