As excitement over his first mural in Hollywood grew, Wyland responded to public demand for environmental-themed public art by creating “Life Size Blue Whales”, a massive tribute to an animal of almost unimaginable proportions. Earl Lestz, then President of Paramount Pictures, dedicated this mural in September of 1994 and assisted with selecting the location. Presiding
over the heart of Hollywood, this mural showcased the deep connection between conservation and art. But despite the attention, the blue whales still faced an uncertain future as they struggled to recover from their near extinction as a result of whaling. With Hollywood drawing
international attention, this mural added to the important message that more work was left to do if the world hoped to one day see the blue whale return to its once vibrant population levels.

The work for protecting these great whales continued. Even today ship strikes, ocean noise pollution, and heavily trafficked shipping lanes continue to stand in the way of the future of the blue whale.

With the potential to grow to 100 feet long and weigh nearly 200 tons, blue whales are one of the largest animals that have ever lived on earth. Blue whales eat krill in the Californian summer months, consuming nearly 4 tons per day.

The Wyland Foundation seeks to bring attention to conservation, how humans can impact our oceans, through Wayland’s mural and additional programs and initiatives like the Wyland Clean
Water Mobile Learning Center and the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. Protecting our wildlife is not only a downstream activity, but an upstream one as well.
