History of the Boston, Massachusetts Wyland Whaling Wall 38
-Stellwagen Bank Humpbacks
A marine protected area off the coast of Boston, Stellwagen Bank is home to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. In 1993, Wyland continued his journey down the east coast, stopping in Boston to celebrate this rich ecosystem by creating his artistic homage to the magnificent humpback whales who had once been hunted nearly to extinction. At a time before super graphics became a ubiquitous feature across the world, Wyland’s mural – painted as a gift to the people of Boston – played its own part in raising awareness about the newly established sanctuary and the continuing need for people to understand their connection to the future survival of these great species. Wyland routinely warned that ceasing whaling was not enough. “We needed to see farther into the future and how we were impacting the ecosystems these animals depended on.”
More to Consider:
- Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is home to over 575 documented species, including some of the world’s most endangered whales.
- Humpback whales in this region can consume up to 1.5 tons of food daily, including krill and small schooling fish like herring and mackerel.
