History of the Washington, D.C. Wyland Whaling Wall 45
-Dolphins-SMall Tooth Whales
While the mural at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., was the smallest Whaling Wall the artist had created until that point, it remains one of his most important. Painted on a wall adjoining the entrance to the zoo, Wyland selected a pair of dolphins as the subject to accommodate the relatively small size of the location. The triangular-shaped mural quickly became a favorite landmark for millions of visitors each year until it was repainted in 2023 to focus on the Smithsonian’s research on coral reefs. Wyland’s work drew accolades from the World Wildlife Fund and the National Wildlife Federation, among others. While in Washington that year, the artist also presented the Very Special Arts gallery with an original painting to be made into a print to help raise funds for artists with disabilities.
