History of the Honolulu, HI Wyland Whaling Wall 67
-Earth Day Hawaii
Whaling wall 67
On the 25th anniversary of Earth Day, actor Pat Morita dedicated “Earth Day Hawaii” to celebrate the biodiversity and beauty of Hawaii’s marine ecosystem. This striking mural, painted in Honolulu, drew attention to the Pacific Ocean and Hawaii’s lush volcanic landscapes. This incredible location is a place where land, water, and life meet as one. “Earth Day Hawaii” served as a call to action for environmental change and added to the narrative that was present at the time regarding climate change, habitat destruction, and ocean pollution.
Choosing to dedicate this mural on Earth Day brought to light the importance of ensuring that our world’s fragile ecosystems are here for years to come, particularly in Hawaii, where animals rely on these systems to live despite rising sea levels and warming oceans.
Did You Know?
Over 7,000 marine species call Hawaii’s coral reefs home. They bring in around $800 million annually for tourism. Greenhouse gas emissions and their long-term effects on ocean temperature and sea levels were the focus of conservation conversations in 1995.
The Wyland Foundation continues to seek to connect arts and sciences through murals, like Wyland’s “Earth Day Hawaii”, that highlight both the celebration of the natural wonders found on our beautiful earth and a constant reminder that we need to protect these ecosystems. Programs like the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation and other classroom initiatives with the foundation hope to inspire others to take action to protect our environment in meaningful ways.
