-A Time for Conservation

A few months later, Wyland completed two murals in Kapaa, Kauai; the first of the two murals showcased a humpback soaring upward in a mighty breach, with the rugged Na Pali coast in the background. “As I stood on the scaffolding painting this great whale, I took a step back and realized how magnificent these creatures are,” Wyland recalls. “The only thing that compares to painting the animal life-size would be witnessing the living whale clearing its 40 tons out of the ocean. You could almost feel the salt spray as the mural was completed. This is the first time I’ve used the Hawaiian landscape in one of my Whaling Walls.”

Environmental Notes

• A key victory for Hawaii’s marine environment took place in  1992 when the federal government established the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. The sanctuary protected over a thousand square miles of vital habitat.
• Although Hawaii’s coral reefs cover only a small fraction of the earth’s oceans, these vital
  ecosystems support 25% of marine life species.
