History of the Kauai, Hawaii Wyland Whaling Wall 29
-Humpbacks off the Pali Coast
After finishing the clock mural in Kapaa, Kauai, Wyland painted another mural nearby. This painting shows the long, rugged Na Pali coast and offers a view of the shore from above and below the ocean. The mural features a life-size green sea turtle and Wyland’s first Hawaiian monk seal, which is native to the waters of Kauai. “;The monk seal was highly endangered even back when I painted this, and I wanted to bring attention to this incredible native of the islands” says Wyland. “The mural seems to blend into the natural environment as the clouds drift across the sky and into the painting, becoming one with the land.”
Why it matters
Native to the Hawaiian Island, Hawaiian Monk seals are considered to be among the most endangered marine mammals in the world. Over the past decades, they have suffered due to habitat loss and entanglement in fishing nets. More recently, a changing climate has dramatically affected their food sources, while pollution runoff from urban development has led to cases of toxoplasmosis, a virus transmitted from feral cats.
- The Wyland Foundation’s programs and educational outreach are aimed at building a broader understanding of human activities and causes leading to the threats currently faced by the Hawaiian monk seals.
- Although the numbers of these animals have rebounded slightly, they remain classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
