On the ceiling of the Wyland Studio Gallery in Laguna Beach rests Wyland’s “Pacific Realm” mural, a tribute to the vast Pacific Ocean and its breathtaking marine life. Late actor Lloyd Bridges and astronaut Buzz Aldrin dedicated this mural in a collaboration that symbolically
brought earth and space exploration together to call out the fragility of life. As one of the first humans to see space, Aldrin recognized that protecting the waters from which all life depends on is an incredibly admirable and important goal. California coastlines, such as those around Orange County, California, and Laguna Beach in
particular, have long stood as marine conservation hubs and a reflection of positive environmental protection. “Pacific Realm” expressed the interconnectivity between life in the ocean and life on land, particularly in an area of California that regularly sees the direct impact humans have on the water.

The vital role the Pacific plays in everything from the vast ecosystems it supports and its ability to help regulate the planet’s climate cannot be understated. As a member of the California Marine Protected Area network, Laguna Beach assists in preserving and protecting the Pacific against overfishing, effectively safeguarding marine habitats along the coast.

“Pacific Realm” is not only a testament to the beauty of the Pacific Ocean, but it also embodies the efforts of the Wyland Foundation to remind people that we share the planet with countless species. Understanding this, as well as the need for protecting our waters, is a critical
component in the effort to protect our oceans for future generations.
