History of the Marathon Keys, Florida Wyland Whaling Wall 27
-Minke Whales
Whaling wall 27
A second mural in Marathon, Florida Keys, was completed at the Natural History Museum. The depiction included a minke whale, a green sea turtle, and a large manta ray that offered “a window into the ocean,” according to Wyland. “The museum had these great classrooms for students, and the mural gave them a
completely new perspective of these animals at their true size.”
Looking Back
- In the mid-1980s, Minke whales continued to be hunted by various countries under the guise of
scientific research. - In the early 1990s, areas of the Florida Keys were showing increased effects of coral bleaching
and habitat destruction. These two impacts foreshadowed future declines in biodiversity - Wyland Foundation programs, like the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge, work to link the water and pollution issues of cities across the nation to promote healthier habitats before problems magnify downstream.
