An indoor swimming pool in Mission Beach, California, would provide the stage for Wyland’s next mural. Appropriately called”;The Plunge,” the huge pool had served residents in the area since the ;20s. Recently restored, the pool owners wanted Wyland to paint the large wall overlooking the water, which, at one time, had borne another mural. The project was an excellent opportunity to paint the orca whales that frequented the waters off Point Loma. Following several trips with regional researchers, Wyland decided to paint a local pod they had been studying, and soon, this group of life-size orcas was giving the word “plunge” new meaning as they loomed high above the old swimming pool.
“Most people don’t realize that orcas live off of the California Coast,” Wyland points out.
“Orcas live in almost all of the oceans. I had hoped people would begin to realize just
how precious they are and that they existed on this planet long before man claimed it for his own.”
