As word of Wyland’s work caught on, the artist was subsequently invited by the Sydney Aquarium in Darling Harbor to paint his second mural in Australia. Seeking to make a bold statement, Wyland rose to the challenge of creating a ninety-foot-long mural of a mother humpback and calf at the front of the aquarium, where it greeted visitors – many of whom had never seen a great whale in its full dimensions – up close. “The painting was not only big, but it was also one of my most detailed and realistic portrayals of a mother humpback with her baby swimming through a cathedral of light,” Wyland said.
Darling Harbor — one of Sydney’s most populated areas — is visited annually by millions of international travelers and local citizens. The new addition of the life-size humpback and calf offered a far-reaching message about the ocean’s gentle giants.
