-Heavenly Waters
Whaling wall 70
The late Bob Hunter, co-founder of Greenpeace, dedicated Wyland’s “Heavenly Waters” in Canada in September of 1997. This mural explore the importance of conservation from the perspective of Canada’s freshwater systems, which flow directly into the Atlantic Ocean. The Redpath Sugars building was the perfect canvas, according to Wyland, as it overlooked Toronto’s waterfront and helped to bring to light the importance of being active in saving our waterways. Toronto is located on Lake Ontario, one of the world’s Great Lakes, and is a part of
a larger freshwater system, one of the largest on Earth.
At the time of this painting, Canada was deeply focused on maintaining a high quality of water and preserving the Great Lakes, which were gradually succumbing industrial pollution and runoff. Thanks to Wyland and organizations like the Wyland Foundation, awareness is regularly raised regarding the preservation of Toronto’s marine life and its global connection to the freshwater waterways.
Did You Know?
84% of North America’s surface freshwater stems from the Great Lakes, providing water for more than 40 million people. Toronto places careful attention in managed development and revitalizing the local urban landscape, while also maintaining their freshwater waterfront’s integrity. “Heavenly Waters” reflects the important and vital role played by Toronto’s freshwater systems, and others around the world. The Wyland Foundation is dedicated to protecting these waterways and ensuring people understand that their upstream actions have downstream consequences.
