Wildwood, New Jersey Wyland Whaling Wall 43

Humpbacks off the Jersey Coast

Wildwood, New Jersey Wyland Whaling Wall 43

History of the Wildwood, NJ Wyland Whaling Wall 43

-Humpbacks off the Jersey Coast

Accustomed to seeing nearby Atlantic City and its famous boardwalk receive publicity for decades, Wildwood, New Jersey, welcomed the opportunity to host Wyland’s next Whaling Wall. The 6,000- square-foot mural was a veritable who’s who of marine life found off the New Jersey coast, including
humpback whales, dolphins, tuna, and sea turtles. Like many of the projects then, people were unaccustomed to public art of the size and scope required to depict life-sized whales, “so crowds would gather and watch for hours,” Wyland said. “One of the best parts was taking breaks to come down from the scaffolding to talk to the kids and answer questions. They have a natural curiosity about the ocean, and I knew from the start how important they would be to helping change things in the future to save these animals and protect their habitat.”

Did you know

In the decades between 1970 and 1990, over 1,000 oil spills along the New Jersey coastline had a severe impact on regional marine life and coastal ecosystems.
