History of the Wilmington, NC Wyland Whaling Wall 48
-Coastal Dolphins
Various obstacles prevented Wyland from painting the large wall that had been initially selected for a mural in Wilmington, North Carolina. With little time remaining on the mural tour, a smaller replacement was found. “I remember telling people it was a postage stamp compared to my other murals,” Wyland
said.” But it turns out that size doesn’t always matter. People came from all over Wilmington to watch the progress, and I was more than happy with the way everything turned out. It’s always fantastic to see how much people care about our planet. All I do with my foundation, my art, and our mission is to say, ‘spread
the word”
The mural, which required only 50 gallons of paint, portrays 124 local Atlantic bottlenose dolphins playing off the North Carolina coastline. After talking with local sea turtle experts, Wyland also added a threatened loggerhead turtle swimming beneath the cavorting dolphins. “I do my best work when I start a mural with no preconceived idea other than looking for ways to connect the spirit of the mural to the community,” Wyland said.”This gives me the flexibility to learn more about the local environment and just let the marine life swim into the oceans I paint on the walls.”
